Henry joins the army!

620,000 Americans died in the Civil War - 360,000 Union soldiers and 260,000 Confederate soldiers!

Review the Library of Congress webpage noted below:
http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/timeline/civilwar/soldiers/soldiers.html

Look at the stories of individual soldiers and look at the pictures. Then post a comment that answer the following questions:
  • Why did young men join the military during the Civil War?
  • Read one of the stories listed on the LOC page. What emotions did the people experience about the war and serving in the military?
  • How did the people in the primary sources compare to Henry in The Red Badge of Courage? Be sure to comment on how they are the same and how they are different.

You may read the comments of other students and comment AFTER you answer these questions.

  2. The young men joined the army during the civil was because most of the young soldiers wanted to be in the army because they wanted to be with part of their family like their dad, brother, sister, or mom.

  3. 1)Young men went to war to fight for what they thought was right, and also to follow his family members.
2)It was hard when America was fighting America because fathers where fighting son, Grandfathers
Grandchildren, Brothers fighting each other wives hurt because families where being torn apart.
3)It seems close to the red badge of courage because it is the same war that is talked about, these people come from all different backgrounds and mothers sending sons to war was hard.

  4. Young men wanted to join the army because they wanted to fight for whats right and most of the young men wanted to join the army.

It was kind of happy but sad at the same time because sometimes you be fighting people you knew like friends or family members.

The things they have the same is the war. They both are in the same war. The different is the people.

  5. 1) Some boys joined because other soldiers talked them into it, others because they had fought once before, others joined to be like their fathers, brothers, cousins, etc.
    2) "Gus Bowles Goes to War" Emotions people felt were fear, sorrow, boredom, and pain of killing another human being.
    3) The people in the sources and the book are alike because sons join the army, much to the dismay of their mothers, and they spend long days in the same place. They are diffrent because their reasons for joining are diffrent, they have diffrent jobs to do in the Army, and one is captured.

  6. 1) Young men went to war to show their bravery and because many of their family members had gone to war and they wanted to be just like them.
2)The emotions people had were sad. They were sad because they didn't know if they were going to ever come home or see their family and friends agian.
3)They are kind of the same because the same thing is happening today with the war. People are making the same decions that Henry did with joining the war. They are also feeling the same emotions that Henry is (example: is this really what they want to do.) They are also differnt because some people want their son's/daughters to go to the war because its really what they want.

  7. 1)Young men jioned the military because all they have heard about it is romanticesized. They also thought they could be heros

2)I read Gus Bowles Goes to War: He thought he was going to be a hero but when the train was comming fast and he saw all the people on their I think he changed his mind

3)It is kind of the same because they both thought war was easy but when they got thier it wasn't. They both had thought of turning and running.

    2) "The Photographs of the Civil War" Emotions the people felt were that they were scared to die from a shot or a cannon.
    3) The people in the sources and the book are alike because the men go to join which make the mothers very unhappy and that they spend so much time in one cetain area. They are different because they joined for different reasons and they had different jobs to do in the military.

  9. 1. Young men enlisted in war to do what was right for there life.
    2. The emotions of the people were sad and they did not reconize there own family because they have been gone so long.
    3. The differences are great in the book Henry thought war was a great thing and in the story the person wanted to home because he was scared.

  10. 1. A couple reson why young men went to serve in the Civil war is that they were perswaded by other soilders or the president.
    2. Doc. Gus Bowles goes to War. Gus is left at home at first because his father goes to war but he wants to fight. when he finally goes and joins the army he wishes he is not at home.
    3. They were like henry because they wanted to fight so they signed up but when they got out there they weren't sure if they could do this.

  11. 1. Men joined the army for many reasons, to fight for what the belived, to make their loved ones proud of them, to esacpe from the prevous life and many other reasons.

    2. During the civil war people went through fear, sadness, happiness, regret, acomlishment, homesick. In the document i read Lewis McBride went through many of these feelings. He was shot in the knee while fighting. He spent months in a hospital. After he recovered he was discharged and when to Marenge, Iowa where his father went.

    3. After reading through the stories, many seemed to have similar experiances. They ate the same food, had to stand guard, and had to fight.
None of the stories talked much about fear.

  12. 1)Young men joined the military because they heard stories from other soldiers and were convinced that they had to join. They basically wanted to fight for their families and wanted to fight for something they believed in.

2)In the story "Gus Bowles Goes to War" he gets a little bored doing the same thing for two or three months straight. But when he actually was getting ready for battle he get kinda scared and wishes he was home.

3)Both Henry and Gus rush into war because of stories they hear and they both end up getting scared. They are different because Gus actually meets his dad there but Henry doesn't know anyone.

  13. (1) I think that young men joined the military during the Civil War because they thought it would be an adventure. Newspapers told great glorifing stories about intense battles won with courage. The young men might also have known someone who had gone to war. This person might either still be fighting, or now be being doted upon. Either way, the young man would be further inspired by them to fight themselves.
    (2) In the story that I read, "Mr. Johnson Remembers Morgan's Soldiers", a young man witnessed a troop of soldiers passing by. They were greeted warmly and traded in some of their horses. The young man seemed to admire the soldiers as he went to fetch water for them.
    (3) In "The Red Badge of Courage", Henry was eager to join the army to feel important and to be a part of what he thought would be a glorius, couragous, honorable war. It seemed that in these stories, that is what the people thought at first, but then as they actually started fighting they found out it was much more grusome than that. One man even wrote about how he almost got his leg amputated. That is not some wonderful thing to be read in a newspaper. Henry didn't know of any of these terrors when he first signed up to be in the millitary.

  14. 1) It seems that Gus Bowels joined the army to be closer to his dad which is a really good reason. In the other story of the boy he joined to be able to serve his country.

    2) In the story Gus Bowels goes to war it showed the emotions of sitting around guarding prisoners at a very young age and the risks he took to be with his father.

    3) The comparison between the RBOC and the sources is that the soldiers had completely romanticized ideas of war.

  15. 1. There are a few reasons that young men wanted tom join the war. the first is to be closer to family like Gusa Bowels wanted to be closer to his father.Another reason is because they wanted to serve thir country.Last but not least they had heard the romanced versions of war and thought they would be praised like a hero.

2.In the story of "Gus Bowels Goes to War" he feels depression from being away from his father and boredom of doing the same thing for three months. then when the battle begins he felt scared and felt homesick.

    3. The people in in the sources were the same as Henry in the feelings they got when the war began. they are the same in that area because they both had the feelings of getting scared and wanting to go homwwhen the war began. The people in the sources were different because they had a different story. They had some different feelings and didnt think about war in a romanced way like Henry did in the begining before he went to war.

  16. the reason boys joined the war is because they were excited and because many of their fathers went and they wanted to fight with them also some of the emotions of the boys were sad and angry but some people were happy also when i was comparing the book and the sources the book had a lot of romanticized the war a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The reason that young men join the military was because all they have heard of was glorified wars and battles and each one of the young men wanted a peice of the glory. The emotions that this man expressed were loneliness while he was in prison and he felt like he had it a lot better than other men in the prison because he could make jewlery and sell them to the union guards and spend the money on food and propper clothing.
    1. they were both young men when they went to war.
2.They both thought that war was a lot easier than it really is.
3.They left their families at young ages

  18. 1)one reason young men joined the army was to be close to their fathers or friends
2)Some of the emotions were people thought thaat it was cool and awesome but once they got to war they regreted enlisting

  19. 1.) Young men wanted to join the army for a variety of reasons. Romanticism was common in this time era and many young men thought that they were going to be hero's and that going to war was fun. Many of the young men looked up to their father and relatives and wanted to be like them. Many of them wanted to help their country and heard the soilders talking about how fun it was. Even newspapers made the war look fun and enjoyable. Men were inspired to go fight and their was alot of pressure to go help your country.

2.) Many citizens who did not go to war felt hurt, anger, and did not think that the people in the war were hero's they were bad, and took their stuff. Many of the people who went into the army were excited and ready to go fight and be a hero. After the first battle they realized war wasn't all that it was cracked up to be and that they didn't like it as much as they thought they would. People were sad because everyday a loved one in someone's family was killed, or wounded. There were a few people who looked up to the soilders when they marched through the town with their uniforms and their guns. Most women and children had no use for the war however.

3.) The people in the stories and in the book are the same in that they wanted to go to war and ended up their. Henry thought that he would be a hero and eventhough it doesn't really come out and say it most of the men in the stories thought they would be soilders to. Some differences is that Henry seemed quite ignorant going into the war when some of the others seemed to know what they were getting themselves into.

  20. He joined the army because his father was in it and he wanted to be just like him. His mother tried to stop him, much like Henry's mother, but he went anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1)Young men had joined the army because they thought that it was the right thing to do and that it would make them seem braver and stronger. Some joined because they only knew the romantisized version of being in the war.
2)one of the stories was about a man who was captured. when he was captured he was treated very harshly but better than some others were treated. This changed the man completley he was very different after he was released. His own family could hardly even reconize him.
3)Before some of the primary sources went to battle they were excited just like Henry, they had a complete romantisized image of the battle in their heads. Bue once just like Henry, they actually got to battle they relize its not heros, and crowns anymore.

  22. 1. Young men joined the military to show off to their friends or to help serve for their army with their fellow soldiers.
    2. Not many people wanted to see their family join the army especially the mothers. But when any one did join the army, they found out that it was a boring job with little food and not much to do.
    3. The boys all wanted to join the army like many of their fathers but learned that the army is no place for a boy. Henry learned this quick too. No one wanted to fire a gun like Henry but others went one with anyway.

  23. 1.Boys joined the war because they herd of what you can can get out of it peace, respect and honor.
    2. The emotions that they had were strong. They had sad and confusing emotions because they had lost some of there family.
    3. Some of the same things that compair is that Henrey herd the same thing as in the book about what he woul dget out of it. Also because he wanted to be a man that went. Some of the differneces are that it doesnt explain Lincon and it doesnt explain the kids that went at such a young age

  24. 1. They are excited, they find war to be as they have heard, as in Red Badge of Courage, as royal and beautiful, to become heroic. In the story of Gus Bowles Goes to War he goes to war because he was talking to the Confederate war and it caught his attention. He was excited and wanted to be in war with his father although his mother didn't agree.
    2. In the story of Gus Bowles Goes to War he said that he got tired of it. Although, his duty was just to stand gaurd for hours at a time a few times a week he did not enjoy it. He expected more.
    3. They are the same because they both thought that war would be better than excpected. They are different because Henry hadn't gone because he wanted to be with his father, or follow his foot steps, and hearing about it at a young age, but because he thought it sounded like a "greek battle", almost royal and like I said, heroic.

  25. 1. They joined the millitary because they thought that's what's right for their life. Also they joined because their family joined such as Fathers, Brothers, Uncles etc.
    2. Gus Bowels felt fear, sorrow and pain for killing another human
    3. The people are alike in joining the army because they are sons, their mothers are sad, and they spend many days in one place. They are different because they want different jobs in the army and one is captured

  26. they are diffrent because henry tells us how the war is bad and everything and this storys on this ones are kind of fairy taleish but all of them are good they are the same by telling us about the soldiers and how they camped out and stuff like that and the storys on this website are kind of like heroic because the gus goes to war one he said that he feels so brave that he got to go to war at only thirteen

  27. 1.Young men joined the military because they thought it was ging to be a war like the ones they read about.

    2. People were suprised that the war was so brutal and not what they had read about in books. They thought that being in the military was heroic and glorious.

    3. Gus Bowles told his mom he wanted to join the military and his mother discuraged him just like in the Red Badge Of Courage, but Gus Bowles wanted to fight because his father was in the military to and henry didn't have family in the military and joined the oposit sied that Gus did.

  28. 1) The young men went into the war for many different reasons. Romantisism was a big part, they wanted to be hreos and they thought that war was something that they could win very easily. Some also joined to be with their family, like their brothers, fathers, and some even had mohters in the war.

    2) Henery was very confident in himself and a little nervous to, after he herd a soldier talking about maybe running, and so did the people in the stories on the LOC site sounded like they had confidence to but they were a littel nervous at first but then they made it through the war so they sounded happy.

    3) Henry in the Red Badge of Courage wanted to go to war because of the stories he had herd of it, and he wanted to be a hero, the people in the stories wanted to be in the war to be a hero or because they thought that it was a beautiful thing and not what it was, they romantisised it, they were different to because some of the people in the stories on the LOC site went into the war to support what they bilieve in.

  29. Youngmen would join the millitary during the Civil War to fight for their rights and to gain respect.
This young boy, Gus Bowles, age 13 went to go see his father in Houston. His mother didnt want him to go and begged him not to. When he reached his father in Houston, he was very surprised and wanted his boy to go home. His father talked to the Colonel. He said that if Gus wanted to stay then he could while his father went home.
Gus was not so thrilled that they lived in starvation rations. When his father was gone they had went into battle. He sure wished he was back home. Gus liked the thought of battle, but wasnt ready for it.
The people in the primary source campares to Henry because his mother didnt want him to go. Also, he was afraid of battle, just like Henry when he asked the General about running. This is different because Henry didnt leave to go see his father.

  30. 1. The reason men joined the military during the civil war is because they felt they owed their country something and they wanted the respect.
    2. the emotions in the war were mixed, some were proud to serve their country, and others were outraged.
    3. The people in the primary sources are similar to henry in the sense that they thought of war as a noble cause and that they would all be heros. Although they are also different some didn't even want to go to war and they looked down upon it.

  31. 1. Many men wanted to join the war to follow in their fatheres footsteps. Also romanticism war very commom in that time. Men thought that war was fun and enjoyable. It made the men heros fighting for what they believed was right, but many backed out because it was not what they expected war to be.

    2. In the story,"Gus Bowles Goes to War",he got very board doing the same thing over and over again. But once he started fighting he, along with many others felt ashamed and sad because they were killig other people. They were scared and fearful.

3.The people in the book," The Red Bsdge of Courage" and people from the stories are the same for wanting to go to war. They wanted to go and be a hero, and they wanted everybody to look up to them. Something that was different was that in the story, Henry was a little bit ignorent because he really didn't know what he was getting himself into, as in the stories the didn't really know either but the had an idea.

    3. The people in the storys and Henery were similar because, they wanted to go to war. Also, some of them felt fear, like Henery. They were diferent because, they felt diferent emotoins.

  33. 1. Young men wanted glory. They had heard romantisized tales or war. They all seemed to think it was a beautiful thing, and they wanted to be a part of that. The young men were determined to come back a winner, or die with glory.

    2. They all felt scared and excited for the war. Those that knew what it was really like were weary. the ones that didn't know were mainly excited, and breathless with what they thought was war. Pride and honor being another ting many people were feeling. As for the familys of soldiers, they were just scared for their lives.

    3. In one particular one, of Gus, who followed his father to war against his mothers wishes, you can see a definite similarity. Many of them were scared and concerned and at the same time they felt that it was needed to go, and to make a change, one way or another. They went against wishes, and came into the army young. They felt the anger and passion and heat of the military surrounding them. Whether they were in the war or vistiting family.

2 People were starved from soldiers eating all there food. It was hard to survive winter with no food. people wanted or didnt want war some joined for slavery or to end slavery some just wanted to be known.
3 The boys in some of the storys acted just like henry they were romatisized by war the thought it was all about courage and bravery. But other storys had nothing to do about courage those people were hungry and wanted to survive the war.

  38. 1. Men joined the army for several diffrent reasons. One motive could be that they simply just wanted to fight for what they belived in and another could be that they wanted to make their faimly and people they cared about proud and mabey it could be as simple as Starting oevr agin, escaping from A previous life

    2. There are many mixed emotions in the war,but one example is in the story "Gus Bowles Goes To War", you can see that he got somewhat boared doing the same thign over and over again as a normal person but once he statrted fight , like many others he felt sorrow and regret for shooting and killing many people that he had no idea about.

    3. The charters in the red badge of courage were very simalar because they wanted to got to war but once they got there they were filled with so many mixed emotions that it was like they were physicaly fighting but they were also having an inner battle with themselves

    3. There were a lot of similarities because henrys mom didn’t want him to go but he still went and they were both afraid. But there was deferent’s to because Henry was going to the army just to go and Gus wanted to go because his dad was in the army.

  42. 1.)Young men faught in the war for numerous reasons such as, wanting to carry on the tradition of serving time in the war just as their elders did, free will and dedication, to fight for what they believe in, or just for the pride and justice.

2.)In the story "Gus Bowles goes to war" he thought very highly of the whole situation and he was eager to go out there and fight for his country but once he actually got there he was afraid and he wanted to go home.

3.)The sources on the site and the book are alike because sons almost always join the army to the referal of their family members. They are different because their emotions vary.

  43. 1).Young men joined the army during the civil war because they wanted to prove there honor, and they thought war would be easy and fun because of the romanticized stories of war they hear about.

2). There were a lot of emotions during the civil war. Fear and excitement were the main feelings because people were excited about going to the military, but they were scared when they actually had to fight.

3). Henry and some of the people such as Gus Bowles off of the story ''Gus Bowles Goes to War because the two wanted to go to war because they though war was a pretty thing and that it would make them cool. A difference is that Gus knew about what was ahead where Henry did not.

  44. 1.Most of the young men joined the war because they had a roll model, or someone they wanted to be like, who was in the war. So to be like them they had to fight in the army too. Henry in The Red Badge of Courage was interested in the war because he read about in the news paper. Gus in the primary sources wanted to be in the war because his father was.
    2. At firsts Gus was Scared to have to fight but he was willing because his father was. He was very excited to join the war at first because he wanted to be like his father. But when the time came he wanted to leave and go home but he stayed and it turned out the war was over so he didn’t have to fight.
    3. Similarities: They were Both Scared to fight in a war. They both had never fought in a war before.
Differences: The people in the primary sources had a roll model in the war that they wanted to imitate. Henry did not have anyone to imitate he mad the decision of war on the own with no persuasion from others.

    3. Henrys mother did not want him to go like in other stories in the LOC site. He was going because the stories influenced him to go not because he had a family member in the war that he wanted to be with.

  47. For young men joining the military, they were greatly influenced by a parent, usually a father, who had joined the War; and the children wanted to live up to the legacy before them, or just follow in their footsteps to honor their country.

There were always several mixed feelings about being in the military, and the war itself. For example, Gus Bowles was so excited to enlist to meet up with his father and be with him, but after he got a taste of the military life of three hours a week watching prisoners for several months, Gus wasn’t exactly living a dream. Another example- when the man was captured as a POW and was held captive…he was treated alright, but of course tried to run away at every open chance he received. He never made it, but he always wanted to try. A Virginian man…he had relatives who knew Booth as a good man, and he was confused as to who he should believe…Also- a man had seen boys in the military as delightful people, good company. They were gentlemen, and represented true manhood. Obviously, in the war, unpleasant things would arise, such as raids…but they were always polite. They never stole…but swapped. So, I guess the overall feelings were just mixed, because there were different sides and different opinions, and different life stories.

Well, I guess that a lot of people in the sources went to war for somewhat heroic purposes…whether it be the romantic side of the story or the family influence. Most of the people saw their situation as boring, or a let down, whereas some feared for the worst, or even just never saw battle. At this point, Henry hasn’t even seen the face of battle, but is facing his own doubts about bravery, and if his whole situation was really worth it.

  50. 1. One of the reasons I think young men went off to war is because they saw it in a very romantisized way. Also some of them went to war to be or fallow their father/ family and do the same things they did. Another reason is they felt it was either right for them or right for their country.
    2. Off of the story "Gus goes to was" he was very excited to go to war, he was also very eager. But when he got there he was very nervous and scared. So some of the feelings were related to scared and he wanted to go home once he was lined up to fight.
    3. There are many similarites and diffrences between the book and the stories off of this website. One example of a similarity is in the book most of the privates go to war because their fathers go to war and they want to fallow their fathers. Another similarity is the mothers do not want Gus or Henry to go to war. But they both end up going. Some of the diffrences between the book and the information on this website is, Henry didn't exactly know what he was doing going into the war.And some of the other youth going into war knew more of what they were doing; they had an idea of what was going to happen.

  51. 1)Young men joined the army during the Civil War because they wanted to be heros and they thought that war was easy.

    2) Emotions that people experience during the war were sadness and excited. Sadness because some people lost all their family or their husband left to go to the army. Excited because young men went to go join the army and wanted to fight.

3)One thing that is the same is that people experienced excitment in the army. Another same thing is how the soldiers acted in camps. A difference is Henry was bragging about joining the army and other people didn't.

  55. the story that i read told me that the non-army civialians disliked the soliders because they were reckless and stole from the civilians homes.

the probable way they found primary soures is the pictures and written documents from the time.

  56. 1) Young men wanted to join the army during the civil war to take after their family, and also because they wanted to be with other people.

    2) The emotions that they had was that sad because some people might have killed brothers, grandfathers, dads, friends, or any one else.

3)They were same because they both had the same basic needs, both involved in wars, their moms didnt want them to go to war and risk their life, and they wanted to go to war but at the same time they were scared because they didnt know what they were getting into .
Differences- The differences was that they had different emotions.

  58. - Young men joined the armies for a variety of reasons, and many did not consider the backdraws of warfare, as popular media displayed a largely romanticized idea of combat; art and literature encouraged civilians to the concept of war, when if displayed realistically would ultimately desuade the general public from enlisting during a time of war.

    - From interviews with persons alive throughout the American Civil War, it can be assumed that many people of that era where living through a time of misery, despair, and desparation.

    - It would be feasable that Henry felt very similar to the former military personnel interviewed in the material from my primary sources, yet this assumption may appear inaccurate due to the fact that Henry's story from The Red Badge of Courage was far more detailed, and contained much more dialogue than the interviews.

  59. (1) When young soldiers decide to join the millitary or fight in the war today, it is different than when Henry decided to go fight in "The Red Badge of Courage". Today, before they are sent to fight in battle, the soldiers get training and you can't just sign up anywhere and then just show up at a camp. Back then, people had a worse chance of surviving war because of their lack of training. These past soldiers were also fighting with much different weapons than we use today, and they were fighting inside their own country. When soldiers are sent to Iraq today, they are equipt with modern weapons and the urge to fight probably isn't as strong since the battle's in Iraq and not in America. Another reason why the urge isn't as strong to join the army today is because the newspapers arn't continually publishing glorifing articles discribing war in a compleatly unrealistic way. Back then, war was very romanticised which was why many young men chose to join the army. Those are a few reasons explaining why the choice to join the army and fight in a war is much different today than it was in Henry's time.
    (2) I currently know no one that is serving in the war in Iraq.
