Best and Worst

What were the three best things about this book, in your opinion?

What were the three most challenging things, or least enjoyable parts, of this book for you?

Pro-war or Anti-war?

Some people think The Red Badge of Courage is a book that shows the honor and bravery of soldiers in war. Other people think that it is an anti-war novel that shows why wars should be avoided. What do you think? Use two examples from the book to back up your opinion.

"Back in the Day" vs Now

In what ways do you think the decision to join the army (Navy, Airforce, or Marines) is the same today as it was when Henry made the decision to go to fight in the Civil War?

Do you know anyone who is serving in the military today? What made him/her join?

Henry joins the army!

620,000 Americans died in the Civil War - 360,000 Union soldiers and 260,000 Confederate soldiers!

Review the Library of Congress webpage noted below:
http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/timeline/civilwar/soldiers/soldiers.html

Look at the stories of individual soldiers and look at the pictures. Then post a comment that answer the following questions:
  • Why did young men join the military during the Civil War?
  • Read one of the stories listed on the LOC page. What emotions did the people experience about the war and serving in the military?
  • How did the people in the primary sources compare to Henry in The Red Badge of Courage? Be sure to comment on how they are the same and how they are different.

You may read the comments of other students and comment AFTER you answer these questions.
